How do I fix Unknown Artist, Unknown Album or garbled music tags?

Inspect the file in Waketag to determine which fields are blank or unreadable. Correct the title, artist and album manually, or use recognition to find candidate metadata and verify it before saving. Do not rely on the filename alone to repair every field. Test a copy first, especially if a batch of older files has inconsistent text encoding.

1. Work on a copy and identify exactly which fields are missing, garbled or simply inconsistent.
2. Use verified metadata or a reviewed recognition result to correct the title, artist and album independently.
3. Save and inspect the result in both Waketag and your usual player before applying a batch correction.

A filename is not a complete set of tags

Renaming an audio file does not necessarily repair its internal metadata. Older collections may contain several writing or encoding conventions. Test representative files from each group, and avoid replacing meaningful non-Latin text just because a particular player displays it incorrectly.
